In January 2004 Anja Westerfroelke and I held an open workshop at the Digitales meeting days in Brussels, Belgium. We were experimenting with a way of archiving by using a MOO (an online text-based virtual environment, originally used for networked gaming). Our aim was to take the contents of several cardboard boxes full of archive material from the previous Digitales events, and try making this material accessible online through the MOO. During this experimentation, Anja suggested that we speak with some of the women who attended Digitales about this material, as a way to include the perspectives of women other than ourselves in the archiving process.
Archive conversations grew out of this experience with Anja in 2004. This project is based in the development of an activity of hospitality and intimacy around the online Digitales archives. Archive conversations follows from an Archiving Open House (2004), during which I invited guests into my home to archive material from Digitales by way of a play of encounters.
Archive conversations will unfold in two series:
First conversations:
Six women have been invited to meet me for a conversation. Prior to our meeting, each woman has been asked to find something in the online archives of Digitales that interests them in some way. The departure point for our conversation is this interest. After each conversation has taken place, a photo and an indication of what we discussed, along with a link to the archive item, will be posted to this blog.
Second conversations:
Each woman has then been asked to put me in touch with someone else who would be willing to take part in a conversation.
Archive conversations will take place in French and in English.

En janvier 2004, à Bruxelles, Anja Westerfroelke et moi avons tenu un atelier ouvert pendant les journées de rencontre Digitales. Nous expérimentions une méthode d’archivage en utilisant un MOO (un environnement virtuel en ligne basé sur le texte, utilisé à l’origine pour le jeu en réseau). Notre but était d’employer le contenu de plusieurs cartons remplis avec le matériau des événements Digitales précédents et d’essayer de le rendre accessible en ligne à travers le MOO. Au cours de cette expérience, Anja suggéra que nous parlions de ce matériau avec quelques-unes des femmes qui visitaient Digitales, une manière d’inclure des perspectives de femmes autres que nous dans le processus d’archivage.
Archive Conversations s’est déployé à partir de cette rencontre avec Anja en 2004. Ce projet est basé sur le développement d’une activité hospitalière et intime autour des archives en ligne de Digitales. Archiving Conversations suit Archiving Open House (2004) pendant lequel j’ai invité chez moi des personnes à venir archiver le matériau de Digitales par un jeu de rencontres.
Archive Conversations se déroulera en deux parties :
Premières conversations :
Six femmes ont été invitées à me rencontrer pour une conversation. Avant notre entretien, il a été demandé à chacune de trouver quelque chose qui les intéresse d’une manière quelconque dans les archives en ligne de Digitales. Cet intérêt est le point de départ de notre conversation. Une photo avec une indication de ce dont nous avons discuté, ainsi qu’un lien vers l’objet archivé sont postés sur ce blog après que chaque conversation ait eu lieu.
Deuxièmes conversations :
Il est alors demandé à chaque femme de me mettre en contact avec quelqu’un d’autre qui serait disposé à participer à une conversation.
Archive Conversations se déroulera en français et en anglais.
